Hurricane Season Garden Preparedness -
It’s officially hurricane season in Florida which means it is a good time to inspect your trees, palms, and other plants that may need to be pruned. You could save some damage to your house by doing a good pruning now. Getting a head start on removing unneeded items from your yard that could become airborne during a storm is not a bad idea either.
Remember to be on the lookout for standing water around your house since that is a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. There are already an alarming number of mosquitoes buzzing around so no need to create any more if you can help it. It’s a good idea to turn over empty buckets and make sure there are lids on trash cans and other receptacles that could collect water.
Pest problems are at their peak during this month and the rest of the summer so scout often and thoroughly. You may need to give your more vulnerable plants and crops a dose of pest treatment to keep the bugs at bay. I’m not a fan of traditional chemical pesticides since they harm beneficial insects as well as pests. You do not want to kill ladybugs, soldier beetles, or a host of other insects that actually deter pests. Try an organic pesticide for a more eco-friendly solution or create your own homemade pesticide. The homemade pesticides are not too difficult to create and can save you quite a bit of money in the long run. Here is a good site for getting started creating your own natural pesticide: https://www.treehugger.com/lawn-garden/8-natural-homemade-insecticides-save-your-garden-without-killing-earth.html
Just make sure to wear gloves and not spray into the wind if you go for the chili pepper insecticide spray – it will burn!
As always – happy gardening to you!
